Ethical Dental Service • Cultural Immersion • Community Engagement
Program Overview: The Dental Volunteer Program in Guatemala is a 3–4 week immersive service-learning experience based in Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala, designed for university students and healthcare professionals preparing for careers in dentistry, medicine, public health, and related fields. Organized by Kamalbe, this program combines Spanish language immersion, ethical dental and community health engagement, and cultural education, offering participants a meaningful introduction to global and underserved health care while respecting local systems and professional boundaries. The program is well suited for summer service trips, faculty-led programs, and Alternative Break–style experiences, and can be adapted to meet academic or service-learning requirements.
Participant Reflection: “One of the most valuable preparations for my future career in health care came from learning about community health in Guatemala through Kamalbe. The experience strengthened my Spanish, deepened my cultural understanding, and gave me a meaningful introduction to global and underserved health care.” — Former Kamalbe participant
Program Goals The primary goal of the Kamalbe Dental Volunteer Program is to support the development of bilingual, culturally competent healthcare providers through immersive, ethically grounded experiences in Guatemala. Dental care in Guatemala
Dental care in Guatemala is ranked among the lowest in the world. Most of the children have never received any dental treatment and continue to have no access to dental care and education about dental hygiene. Local schools estimate the percentage of students with cavities has reached 77%. The situation is quite alarming, but you can help! At Kamalbe, we are looking for medical or dental students who wish to donate their time and skills to improve the current situation, while also gaining the opportunity to improve their Spanish. Yearly Kamalbe Mobile Clinics have managed to provide assistance to more than 350 children; however, the situation in Guatemala is still severe and we need help to keep running the program and reach our goals. Many rural families do not have access to general health services, our free services are fundamental to assist dental health as well as reduce costs for rural families so that this money can instead be put towards feeding their family. Kamalbe Clinics has the goals of reducing the number of children with dental cavities and assisting local schools with their education. We are not only trying to avoid dental problems but also create a healthy culture through educational programs for the kids by teaching how important it is to take care of their own teeth and general health.
In addition, thanks to the help of volunteers, we have been able to deliver hundreds of packages of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap directly to communities that desperately need them.
We are also currently in the process of building a brand new community centre in Xecanchavox, which will also be home to dedicated dental and hygiene support for the community, providing a permanent base for Kamalbe Clinics.
It costs $1800 per year to run the program. All donations are important to us, no matter how big or small.
