Dental Volunteer Program in Guatemala

Service Trip & Alternative Break Program

Ethical Dental Service • Cultural Immersion • Community Engagement

Program Overview:
The Dental Volunteer Program in Guatemala is a 3–4 week immersive service-learning experience based in Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala, designed for university students and healthcare professionals preparing for careers in dentistry, medicine, public health, and related fields.

Organized by Kamalbe, this program combines Spanish language immersion, ethical dental and community health engagement, and cultural education, offering participants a meaningful introduction to global and underserved health care while respecting local systems and professional boundaries.
The program is well suited for summer service trips, faculty-led programs, and Alternative Break–style experiences, and can be adapted to meet academic or service-learning requirements.

Participant Reflection: “One of the most valuable preparations for my future career in health care came from learning about community health in Guatemala through Kamalbe. The experience strengthened my Spanish, deepened my cultural understanding, and gave me a meaningful introduction to global and underserved health care.”
— Former Kamalbe participant

Program Goals
The primary goal of the Kamalbe Dental Volunteer Program is to support the development of bilingual, culturally competent healthcare providers through immersive, ethically grounded experiences in Guatemala.

Kamalbe works exclusively with community-requested and locally led projects, ensuring that volunteer participation supports long-term initiatives rather than short-term interventions. The program emphasizes education, prevention, cultural understanding, and sustainability.

Who This Program Is ForThis program is designed for:
  • Pre-dental and pre-medical students
  • Dental, medical, nursing, and public health students
  • Psychology, physical therapy, and allied health students
  • Gap-year students preparing for graduate programs
  • Early-career healthcare professionals (observation only)
Participants typically have completed undergraduate studies or are currently enrolled in health-related graduate programs. Spanish experience is helpful but not required.

Program Structure (3–4 Weeks)Spanish Language Immersion

Participants receive one-on-one Spanish instruction, tailored to their level and professional goals.
Classes focus on:
  • Practical communication
  • Medical and dental vocabulary
  • Patient interaction and cultural context
Language learning is reinforced through daily homestay living and community engagement.

Dental & Community Health Engagement
Participants support community dental clinics and mobile outreach programs, including work in rural communities such as Xecanchavox, alongside licensed Guatemalan dental professionals.
Activities may include:
  • Oral health education for children and families
  • Preventive care support and clinic organization
  • Patient intake observation and outreach logistics
  • Ethical clinical shadowing only, under professional supervision
Participants do not perform procedures beyond their level of training or legal scope. All activities follow ethical global health standards.

Cultural & Educational Components: To provide a broader social and historical context, the program includes:
  • Lectures and discussions on healthcare access and inequality in Guatemala
  • Community visits and service projects
  • Guided reflection sessions
Participants also take part in educational excursions, such as:
  • Lake Atitlán, exploring Indigenous culture and rural community life
  • Antigua Guatemala, focusing on history, architecture, and development
These experiences are integrated into the learning objectives of the program and are not tourism add-ons.

Homestay Experience:
Participants live with local Guatemalan host families in Quetzaltenango. Homestays include:
  • Shared daily meals
  • Daily Spanish practice
  • Cultural immersion and community connection
The homestay is a central component of the program and one of the most impactful learning experiences for participants.

Alternative Break & Academic Programs. This program is well-suited for Alternative Break (AB) programs, short-term service-learning courses, and global health experiential learning.

The structure allows for:
  • Meaningful community engagement
  • Ethical service and reflection
  • Academic integration within a 3–4 week format
Programs can be customized to align with university requirements, faculty-led objectives, or departmental goals.

Program Length Recommendation:
A 4-week program is recommended for North American academic standards, as it allows sufficient time for:
  • Language development
  • Deeper community engagement
  • Stronger cultural and professional learning
A 3-week intensive option may be available for participants with limited time.

Program Values:
  • Ethical global health engagement
  • Clear scope of practice and supervision
  • Respect for local knowledge and systems
  • Focus on education, prevention, and sustainability
  • Long-term community partnerships

Dental care in Guatemala

Dental care in Guatemala is ranked among the lowest in the world. Most of the children have never received any dental treatment and continue to have no access to dental care and education about dental hygiene. Local schools estimate the percentage of students with cavities has reached 77%. The situation is quite alarming, but you can help!
At Kamalbe, we are looking for medical or dental students who wish to donate their time and skills to improve the current situation, while also gaining the opportunity to improve their Spanish.
Yearly Kamalbe Mobile Clinics have managed to provide assistance to more than 350 children; however, the situation in Guatemala is still severe and we need help to keep running the program and reach our goals. Many rural families do not have access to general health services, our free services are fundamental to assist dental health as well as reduce costs for rural families so that this money can instead be put towards feeding their family.
Kamalbe Clinics has the goals of reducing the number of children with dental cavities and assisting local schools with their education. We are not only trying to avoid dental problems but also create a healthy culture through educational programs for the kids by teaching how important it is to take care of their own teeth and general health.

In addition, thanks to the help of volunteers, we have been able to deliver hundreds of packages of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap directly to communities that desperately need them.

We are also currently in the process of building a brand new community centre in Xecanchavox, which will also be home to dedicated dental and hygiene support for the community, providing a permanent base for Kamalbe Clinics.

It costs $1800 per year to run the program. All donations are important to us, no matter how big or small.
