Since 2008, volunteers from La Comunidad Spanish School have been traveling to Xecanchavox (click here for the Google Maps view), a rural community outside of Xela, to teach lessons to severely underprivileged women and children. These lessons continue to this day and are immediately available to anyone wishing to take part. In January 2012, after communicating with town members, we decided to set an exciting goal: build a new and improved facility for the Kamalbe Community Center.
The Kamalbe Community Center will act as La Comunidad's base in the town. It will be a dedicated school from where our school can continue giving lessons to the townspeople on a regular basis. Once the Center is built, we will be recruiting full-time volunteers to live in the accommodation provided by the Center, teach the lessons to the community, and take charge of our center from there.
Our architects have quoted us around $18,000 for the full completion of the Community Center, including everything necessary on the interior. The amount we have currently after three months of fundraising is impressive, but we are always looking for new fundraising opportunities to push the project closer to completion. We have a wide variety of sponsors who are helping us reach our goal, and we are working alongside several successful NGOs.
As volunteers for La Comunidad you will have the chance to take part in the fundraising activities planned and organized by the school, and also to organise your own. You will be granted a free reign in planning and creating your own activities. These in the past have ranged from contacting further NGOs to lobby for further funds from them, to organizing large events such as meals and tours. La Comunidad Spanish School is a non-profit organization and so the more students we have, the faster we will reach our goal.
