A local homestay is a great way to participate in Guatemalan culture. We have enthusiastic families waiting to host students and volunteers. Students and volunteers who choose to live with a host family enjoy having meals prepared by their families and get extra Spanish practice during their stay with the family.
We know that the homestay experience isn't for everyone. Our staff frequently provide recommendations for hotels, hostels and guest houses near our school. Contact us if you'd like this information.
We hope your stay with your host family is wonderful! Here’s some information about our homestay experiences.
Our homestay families are located only five minutes away by foot from the school and very close to Central Park, banks, restaurants, post office and everything that you might need during your time in Xela.
Your host family will provide you with the basic necessities of home, which include:
Just like living with your own family, communicating your schedule is important. We will tell your family your daily class schedule. Please, let your family know if you’re planning on eating out for dinner or lunch or if you’re going to be coming home late at night so they don't worry about you!
If you’re interested in activities your family is doing (cooking traditional food, playing futbol, weaving, etc…) ask them if you can join them or help! They might think that you’re not interested if you don’t tell them that you’d like to be a part of what they’re doing.
Many of our families speak little to no english. This is a great chance to practice the Spanish you’re learning during the day. Many families like to help students with their homework and have experience communicating with students clearly in spanish or finding actions, signs, drawings, etc. to get a point across. We are here to help you communicate important information as well. For the students learning Kiche, they can be hosted in families where speak both languages, spanishand Kiche.
While you’re staying in Xela, you will most likely make some friends. Before bringing a guest to your homestay, please talk to your host family. Overnight guests are generally not allowed.
The only additional costs for individuals choosing to live with a host family are:
PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU PREFER NOT TO STAY IN A HOMESTAY, WE CAN RECOMMEND YOU HOSTELS OR HOTELS CLOSE TO KAMALBE SCHOOL XELA AND PARQUE CENTRAL
We are here to help you and your host family maintain clear communication lines and make your stay with them a great experience! Please contact us for more information!
